The Ragovoy-Berns team originally wrote Piece of My Heart for Erma Franklin, Aretha Franklin's older sister. Erma broke into the Top 10 R&B charts with it in 1967 before Joplin made it one of her signature songs.
Jim Steinblatt, from the performance rights group ASCAP, said: "His songs were far better known than he was. Jerry was a giant of soul, R&B and rock songwriting and record production."
Ragovoy, who was self-taught as a composer, recalled that he came up with Time Is On My Side in an hour after an arranger friend asked if he had written any songs that jazz trombonist Kai Winding could record. New Orleans singer Irma Thomas had a hit with the song, which prompted a call from a representative for the Rolling Stones, a band Ragovoy said he'd never heard of.
"Next thing I know, it's out and it's their first hit in this country," he told New Times in 1997. "I was amazed 'cause I listened to it and thought, 'What on Earth is this?"
He also composed songs for Howard Tate, including co-writing Get It While You Can.
Ragovoy, who lived in Stamford, Connecticut with his wife Bev is also survived by twin daughters, Melissa and Gillian.
