Candy Alt Crowley(born December 26, 1948) is an American news anchor currently employed as CNN 's chief political correspondent , specializing in Senate elections. She is based in CNN's bureau and is the anchor of their Sunday morning talk show . She has covered elections for over two decades.
Early lifeCandy Alt Crowley was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan , on 26 December 1948. Her parents were first generation Mexican-Americans who moved to Elsah , Illinois for two years before transferring to bachelor of arts degree in English .
CareerCrowley started her career as a newsroom assistant with the anchor for Associated Press . She moved from NBC to CNN in 1987. She hosted Inside Politics in place of John King as the anchor of the Sunday morning political talk show .
On August 13, 2012, the Commission on Presidential Debates selected Candy Crowley to serve as a moderator for the second presidential election debate between President Barack Obama and his Mitt Romney . She was the first woman to be chosen to moderate a presidential debate since ABC 's Carole Simpson in 1992 . The second debate took place on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at Hofstra University in Hempstead , New York. Crowley was criticized for fact checking Romney about his claim that President Obama did not immediately call the Benghazi, Libya attacks an act of terror. Crowley defended her performance to Soledad O'Brien that her goal was not to fact check, but rather to steer the conversation away from squabbling. We got hung up on this yes he said, no I didn t, I said terror, you didn t say terror. And there was this point where they both kind of looked at me. And what I wanted to do was move this along.
Personal lifeCrowley is a and practices . Crowley is divorced. She has two children and two stepchildren. Her oldest child is a neurosurgeon and her youngest son plays in a band.
